£500K donation to Stratford Hospital from Rigby Foundation

STRATFORD Hospital’s £1million appeal has been given a huge boost following a £500,000 donation from the Rigby Foundation.

Plans to build a cancer and an eye ward at the existing site on Arden Street were given the green light by Stratford District Council back in October.

And within six months of its launch, fund-raisers had already collected £100,000 towards the appeal total – money, which will be used to provide features that do not come as standard in the new £22million hospital.

But yesterday (Thursday) hospital chiefs revealed the charity had agreed to donate £250,000 to the appeal as well as pledging a further £50,000 for each of the next five years.

The cash injection will be used to help enhance research and development – enabling patients to gain access to the newest cancer treatments available.

They also hope the new facilities, which they say will reduce travel time for those living in south Warwickshire, can help the hospital become a centre of excellence for cancer treatment.

Building work on the car park began in December and the project is expected to take two years. The new eye ward will be made up of an outpatient suite with examination, treatment and injection rooms.

And the cancer ward, which is modelled on Warwick Hospital’s Aylesford Unit and is set to include 12 treatment chairs, will be known as The Rigby Unit.

Trust chief executive Glen Burley said: “I would like to thank the Rigby Foundation for their continued support of the hospital.

“We are overwhelmed to have such a generous donation and this, together with the support from local communities, is tremendous – it will really make a difference to patients and sets us in the right direction with our appeal.

“We still need the continued support from our local communities and businesses to make this a truly excellent facility for our area.

“But thanks to the fundraising appeal and this donation, we will be able to ensure the environment these patients receive treatment in is one of the best of its kind in the country and is as comfortable and relaxing as possible.”

Sir Peter Rigby added: “We are excited to be part of the new hospital development and I hope our support will encourage other business and individuals to join in with this fantastic project.

“The Rigby Foundation want to ensure the new hospital is a centre of excellence for patients and our ongoing partnership will provide the support required to achieve this.

“This partnership will not only help the clinical teams take part in research and development but also trial new treatments for cancer patients and we look forward to being part of the hospital development over the next five years.”

Hospital chiefs are still keen to hear from anyone who wishes to fund-raise. Email [email protected] or call 01926 495321 extension 8049.
